Here’s a classic Shepherd’s Pie recipe — a hearty, comforting dish of seasoned meat and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes. Traditionally, lamb is used (beef makes it “Cottage Pie”). 🥧


🥧 Shepherd’s Pie Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

Meat Filling:

  • 1 lb ground lamb (or beef)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas & carrots
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup beef or lamb broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme (or mixed herbs)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Mashed Potato Topping:

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup milk (warm)
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare Mashed Potatoes

  1. Boil potatoes in salted water until tender (15–20 min).
  2. Drain and mash with butter, milk, and salt. Set aside.

2️⃣ Make Meat Filling

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onion 3–4 minutes; add garlic for 30 seconds.
  3. Add ground meat and cook until browned.
  4. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  5. Add broth and simmer 5–8 minutes until slightly thickened.
  6. Stir in peas & carrots.

3️⃣ Assemble Pie

  1. Spread meat mixture in a baking dish.
  2. Spoon mashed potatoes on top and smooth out.
  3. Optional: sprinkle cheese and create fork marks for texture.

4️⃣ Bake

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Bake 20–25 minutes until top is golden and bubbling.
  • Optional: broil 2–3 minutes for a crispier top.

Tips & Variations

  • Add corn for sweetness.
  • Mix mashed potatoes with sour cream for extra creaminess.
  • Use sweet potatoes or cauliflower for a twist.
  • Assemble ahead and refrigerate; bake later (add 5–10 extra minutes if chilled).
