Hungarian cottage cheese dumplings

Posted on December 31, 2025 by Admin

Ah, you mean Hungarian túrógombóc—these are sweet cottage cheese dumplings, soft and slightly chewy, often served as a dessert or a treat. They’re usually rolled in breadcrumbs and sometimes sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Ingredients (for 4 servings)

  • 250 g túró (Hungarian cottage cheese; regular cottage cheese works if drained well)
  • 1 egg
  • 3–4 tablespoons semolina or flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for sweetness)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 50–70 g butter
  • 4–5 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • Powdered sugar (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the mixture: In a bowl, mix túró, egg, sugar, salt, and semolina/flour to form a soft, slightly sticky dough.
  2. Form dumplings: With wet hands, roll the mixture into small balls, about the size of a walnut.
  3. Cook dumplings: Bring a pot of salted water to a gentle boil. Drop the dumplings in and cook until they float to the surface plus 2–3 minutes more.
  4. Prepare breadcrumbs: In a pan, melt butter and toast breadcrumbs until golden.
  5. Coat dumplings: Remove dumplings from water with a slotted spoon, roll in the toasted breadcrumbs.
  6. Serve: Warm, optionally sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Tip: Some people like to drizzle melted butter and cinnamon sugar on top for extra flavor.

If you want, I can also give a version with a slightly tangy twist that uses sour cream in the dough—makes them extra soft and creamy. Do you want that version?
