Classic Thanksgiving Stuffing
Ingredients
- 1 loaf day-old bread (white, sourdough, or mixed), cubed
- 1 stick (½ cup) butter
- 1 onion, diced
- 2–3 celery stalks, diced
- 2–3 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
- 1–2 tsp poultry seasoning
- 1 tsp dried sage (or fresh if you have it)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2–3 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 1 egg, beaten (optional, for firmer stuffing)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Spread bread cubes on a baking sheet and toast for about 10 minutes until dry.
- In a large pan, melt butter and sauté onion and celery until soft.
- Add garlic and seasonings; cook 1 minute more.
- In a large bowl, combine bread cubes and veggie mixture.
- Slowly add broth until moist (not soggy).
- Stir in beaten egg if using.
- Transfer to a greased baking dish, cover with foil, and bake 30 minutes.
- Uncover and bake another 15–20 minutes until the top is golden.

- Cranberries or apples
- Mushrooms
- Fresh herbs (parsley, thyme, rosemary)
Stuffed or Not?
- Inside the turkey: adds flavor but must reach safe temperature
- Baked separately: called “dressing,” safer and crispier
